Expanding Adult Education in Haiti Through EdTek

For years, Fonkoze has used EdTek to bring practical adult education to communities across Haiti. Through tablets used in Fonkoze programs, participants can explore Haitian Creole lessons designed for everyday life—from managing money and building a business to health, disaster preparedness, and other important topics.

This kind of practical learning is an important part of poverty reduction. When people have access to information they can use in their daily decisions, they are better positioned to manage household resources, strengthen livelihoods, prepare for challenges, and pursue the goals they set for themselves and their families.

Now, Fonkoze is preparing to make EdTek available to more learners in Haiti.

A New Way to Access EdTek

Work is nearing completion on a new version of EdTek that will allow people in Haiti to access its educational content beyond the tablets used in Fonkoze programs. The goal is to make lessons available through Android and iOS mobile app stores in Haiti, so more people can learn directly from a smartphone.

Android field testing has been successfully completed, and both versions of the app have been developed. A few final steps remain before the broader public rollout begins.

Participants using Fonkoze tablets will continue to access EdTek free of charge. Other users will be able to purchase individual learning modules for a small fee. This model is designed to help EdTek reach a wider audience while maintaining free access for participants in Fonkoze programs.

Supporting Learning in Rural Haiti

Expanding EdTek opens new possibilities for adult education in Haiti, particularly in remote and rural communities where internet access can be limited and attending a traditional class may not always be possible.

Over time, learners will be able to carry practical Haitian Creole lessons on a device they already use. Rather than limiting learning to a particular classroom or Fonkoze tablet, the new platform is intended to make education more flexible and accessible.

As EdTek enters this next phase, Fonkoze will also be able to learn more about how people use the platform—which lessons they choose, how they engage with the material, and what they learn along the way.

We look forward to sharing more as EdTek gets closer to reaching new learners across Haiti.
